Armistead called Lee. He didn’t have Lee’s cell number, so he punched in Ford Motor Company’s main switchboard number in Dearborn. He correctly assumed if he didn’t use his title, he would never get through to the CEO.

“This is Congressman Tyler Armistead calling from Washington. I’d like to speak to Mr. Lee, please.”

A somewhat irritated switchboard attendant replied, “Sir, we have several Mr. Lees here. Could you be a little more specific?” She didn’t seem impressed with Armistead’s title.

Feeling a little embarrassed, Armistead answered, “Mr. Radford L. Lee, please.”

“One moment, please.”

Armistead laughed to himself, thinking, Being a congressman ain’t as important as it used to be.

After a few seconds, Lee’s assistant answered. “Congressman Armistead, Mr. Lee is finishing up a conference call. If you can hold, he’ll be right with you.”

“I’ll hold, thank you,” said Armistead.

About three minutes later, Lee picked up.

“Dammit, Tyler, the last time I talked to a politician I almost got arrested,” Lee said.

“You’d better show some respect,” Armistead countered, “or I’ll pass legislation requiring you to paint all your cars black.”

Ever quick on his feet, Lee said, “Mandate all you want. That’s what we did ninety-five years ago, and it didn’t hurt us any. How’re you doing?”

“I’m good, Rad. Seriously, I won’t take much of you time, but I wanted to tell you how much I admired what you did in the Senate hearing. It was courageous, and the country needed it and appreciated it.”
